Our Mission & Responsibility
The Michigan City Sanitary District plays a crucial role in protecting the environment and preventing disease. The major components of the District are the collection system and the wastewater treatment plant. The collection system is the initial District safeguard and consists of approximately 206 miles of sewer, over 5400 catch basins, and 45 lift stations all critical in conveying wastewater away from homes and businesses to the wastewater treatment plant. The District treatment plant is the final preventative measure treating an average of six million gallons of wastewater a day to remove harmful pollutants, disease causing organisms, and toxic algal nutrients before returning the water to Trail Creek.
Beyond its core responsibilities, the District manages a wastewater laboratory, an industrial pretreatment program, and maintains drainage ditches. Collectively, these elements play a crucial role in ensuring environmental compliance and public health.
Our Service Areas
The Michigan City Sanitary District’s service area does not exactly match city boundaries. While we serve much of Michigan City, our wastewater and stormwater systems also extend into surrounding areas, and some properties within city limits may fall outside the district’s jurisdiction.

Sanitary Staff
The Michigan City Sanitary District is supported by a dedicated team who manages day-to-day operations by maintaining treatment facilities, sewer systems, and related assets, working together to ensure public safety and reliability.

Education, Outreach & Community Engagement
We are committed to community outreach and environmental education that helps residents understand how wastewater and stormwater systems protect public health and local waterways.
We support school visits, facility tours, and educational opportunities that give students and community groups a behind-the-scenes look at how clean water is protected. Through ongoing outreach and clean water messaging, we also share practical information that encourages responsible habits and environmental stewardship.
